English

Progression from one level to the next is based on grades obtained at the end of 15 weeks of classes in each level. The main objective of the Academic English Course is to raise students’ language abilities to a level equivalent to an IELTS 6. In addition, students are also exposed to a variety of study skills that enable them to become autonomous learners and promote lifelong learning. Both language abilities and study skills empower students to effectively manage their Bachelor studies.

Placement Tests

Students who register at GUtech and do not have the language requirements to enter directly into the degree programmes have to take the ‘Oxford Online Placement Test’ (OOPT). The OOPT is used to test students’ language abilities in order to place them with students of similar abilities across six modules. The OOPT is divided into two parts

  • The ‘Use of English’ section tests grammar, vocabulary and understanding meaning, and
  • The ‘Listening’ section tests a student’s ability to comprehend and interpret audio content.

In instances where the student has already met the language requirements for the degree programmes but has not met those for Math and IT, he/she will be registered in Module A which is dedicated to exposing the learners to academic study skills that they will need when they enter their respective graduate programmes.
