Pure Mathematics is all about logical foundations of Mathematics – concepts, justification, and proofs.

Applied Mathematics seeks to solve problems in the real-world using mathematics as a tool.

It depends on the major you choose. If you are enrolled for Engineering/Geoscience/Computer Science program, you would be offered Pure Mathematics. For IBSM/LOGISTICS/UPAD, you will have to study Applied Mathematics.

All students are offered a placement test in mathematics at the time of admission. If you pass the placement test, it means you know basic/simple math covered in module A, and you are allowed to join module B which is more advanced.

There are two Math streams

  • Pure mathematics
  • Applied mathematics

Pure math path is taken by Science/Engineering students and Applied math is taken by non-science/non-engineering students based on the bachelor’s degrees that they pursue.

Each of the streams is further divided into four modules from A to D

There are two levels in total in both Pure and Applied (Level 1 & 2).

The Pure Math course is available to students whose Bachelor major is:

  • Computer science
  • Applied Geo Science
  • Engineering

The Applied math course is available to students whose Bachelor major is:

  • Logistics
  • Tourism
  • Service Management
  • Urban Planning & architecture

Students begin with Level 1 and if they successfully complete the module, they will be moved to Level 2.

The entry requirements for Foundation Math is at least a pass in the General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent (IB, A level, etc.), and a C grade in English.

If a student has scored at least a 6 in the IELTS exam and passed the IC3 exam, then they are eligible to sit for the Direct Entry Exam in Math. Upon passing the direct entry exam, they will be allowed into the Bachelor Programme.

If they do not pass the Direct Entry exam, they will have to sit a Placement Exam so they can be streamed into the appropriate Math Module in foundation.
